Tools For Success: Habitica
Over the years I have searched constantly for apps to help me become more productive. To be more specific, apps that help me to track tasks daily, weekly, monthly, etc. In my search I have tried a lot of different tools:
- Native lists and reminders in iOS
There several more, but you get the idea. Through all of my searching I was never able to find an app or tool that I used more than 7 days. It’s not that these are bad tools, for the most part they are just the opposite. The problem was me. No matter how much I tried to make my lists meaningful I was never able to motivate myself to stick to them. As asinine as it sounds, I would never stick with the tools because I was not being rewarded for using them.
Then, just last month, a friend introduced me to an app called Habitica.
What is Habitica?
Habitica is a task tracking application that allows you to track your “to-do’s” in a few different categories:
- Habits (performed multiple times per day)
- Dailies (performed 1 time per day or multiple times per week/month at any specified recurrence. Dailies also have checklists)
- To-Dos (performed only once, does not recur)
What gets interesting is the rewards system that is built around Habitica. See, Habitica is not just a task tracking application, but also a role playing game. WAIT! DON’T GO ANYWHERE! Just embrace your inner nerd for a few minutes and you will not regret it.
I will not dig too deep into everything Habitica offers, you can find that here. I just want to share the tool, aesthetics, and explain as simply as possible why it works.
What Does It Look Like?
Simple enough that navigation is a breeze, but interesting enough to keep you captivated.
Why I Stuck With It
Instant gratification, I will let a short paragraph from the Habitica website explain: (also find it here.)
Whenever you reinforce a positive habit, complete a daily task, or take care of an old to-do, Habitica immediately rewards you with experience points and gold. As you gain experience, you can level up, increasing your stats and unlocking more features, like classes and pets. Gold can be spent on in-game items that change your experience or personalized rewards you’ve created for motivation. When even the smallest successes provide you with an immediate reward, you’re less likely to procrastinate.
Simply put, I stuck with it because I was CONSTANTLY being rewarded. Each time I complete a daily or habit I know I will pull out my phone then… BOOM! Dopamine! It’s perfect because it works with the rewards system that is already setup in your body.
Another beautiful thing about Habitica is that it is deep enough to keep you interested, but shallow enough to keep from being sucked into it like some Candy Crush addict. I might spend 10 minutes on the app on my worst days.
Next, lets take a look at some of my habits and dailies.
- Do 10 push-ups
- Walk 10+ minutes
- Complete a Daily Goal (Read more about how I set daily goals here.)
- Read/Listen to a Book
- Drink 8oz of Water
- Wake to first alarm
- Drink coffee with coconut oil
- Journal and set daily goals
- Inbox Zero
- Overcome fear
- Meditate (this is the hardest one)
Even when I am sitting on the couch at home doing nothing, I will think to myself “I can get some experience if I just do some pushups”. Or maybe I will go to bed early so i can wake to my first alarm, heck sometimes I even tear my eyes away from the tv to read!
I am not saying that Habitica will completely turn your life around if you have 0 motivation. However, if you are motivated and you need a tool to help you accomplish more and increase your motivation, this is it.
