Pewdiepie Says the “N word”
To give a little background to anyone who might not know of PewDiePie. He is an extremely popular Youtuber with over 50 million subscribers. PewDiePie also has a large following on the streaming service “Twitch.tv” often with thousands of viewers actively watching. Media outlets are blowing up with this story because being so popular PewDiePie is under similar scrutiny to celebrities in Hollywood.
Why Do People Care?
Obviously the entire thing is a bit of a sensitive topic. It is not improved by the controversy with recent white nationalist rallies and tearing down of confederate statues.
Of course the two main factors that started this fire were:
- PewDiePie saying something stupid and offensive in front of thousands of people.
- Previous controversy this year where media portrayed him as a white supremacist. However, the evidence used in this controversy was misrepresented.
Sure, the guy definitely messed up. He was in front of thousands of people and said something that is known to be offensive. I think the best anyone could have hoped for in the controversy on any side of it would be for the guy to apologize and learn from his mistake. Based on the video it seems that this is the case. Anything else that comes from the controversy will not be constructive for anyone whether they are upset or defend PewDiePie.
I scrolled through some of the Youtube comments and saw so many people arguing. Some were defending PewDiePie and others were calling him a racist. I think it is obvious that the guy is not racist, he just messed up. But regardless of which side you are on arguing on Youtube or any social media will not help anyone. If you are upset that people are criticizing PewDiePie, but you have no influence your comments will carry little weight. If you are upset about what PewDiePie said, but you have no influence your comments will also carry little weight.
The best thing the average person can do in a situation like this is control yourself, your reaction, and your emotions on both sides. There can be a civilized conversation, but these things must precede it. Getting upset or angry for an extended period of time will not punish anyone except for you. Rage and anger are not going to have any affect on PewDiePie unless you are an advertiser who provides him revenue.
In closing, PewDiePie fucked up and then apologized and maybe learned a little. I think that is the best outcome to hope for.
